Thomas Stammer, artist, architect and production designer, and Michael Wertmüller, composer and musician, met in 2001 at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles and began exchanging ideas about sound and space, asking questions such as: How can we create a spatial representation of sound events? How can we spatially incorporate visual content during the compositional process and allow for simultaneous interpretation by conductor or musician? This gave rise to the project: D.I.E: Orpheus Machine.
As an opera under the title D • I • E, the project premiered at the Ruhr Triennale in 2021. The starting point for the composition was the book D • I • E – abstract reality with 13 abstract charcoal drawings by Albert Oehlen and 14 poems by Rainald Goetz. Thomas developed three-dimensional spatial sculptures from the drawings, whose movements and transformations flow directly from Michael's score and were linked live with the music.
The salon evening offered insight into the creative processes and dialogues of the two artists. We learned about how an electronic poem is created, about Le Corbusier and Xenakis, what creative coding is all about, and about holographic music visualization.
